No stopping Nedbank Running Club's Johannes
August 20, 2019
Helalia Johannes from the Nedbank running club is proving that there is nobody who can stop her in the Spar Grand Prix series with yet another win and course record over the weekend in Pietermaritzburg.

Run in cool conditions from the Oval, Johannes and fellow Nedbank running club team mate Tadu Nare from Ethiopia immediately set out in front, a scene all too familiar with this year’s series already. A few surges by Johannes saw her take the lead after 4km and pull away to take victory in a new course record of 32:23 with Nare finishing 2nd in 33:06.

“As always, I am really happy with another win today,” said Johannes afterwards. “Although the plan is to win the series overall, all of this forms my preparation for the World Championships in 2 months’ time and I am very happy with where I am in terms of my form.” Johannes will be representing Namibia in the women’s Marathon and after winning the Commonwealth title last year, looks set to stand a chance of medalling in the heat and humidity of Doha.

Over in George, the Nedbank running club totally dominated the Women’s day 10km with both Francois Maquassa (30:35) and Stephany Pedro (40:12) leading their Nedbank running club team mates to clean sweeps on the podium in the men’s and women’s races.
