The Nedbank Running Club (NRC) is saddened by the loss of one of their bright and upcoming development athletes from Klerkdorp, North West. The 16-year-old Letlhogonolo Ditire (16) was killed in a car accident in his home village while visiting his grandparents.

Letlhogonolo was an excellent track & field and cross-country runner and joined the development club this year after being recruited by development coach and former running great Pio Molokeng. Letlhogonolo moved into the Nedbank Running Club’s development housing in Klerksdorp in January.

Letlhogonolo, a grade 10-student at the Arefadimeheng High School in Klerksdorp, finished his grade 10-exams last Monday and decided to travel home for the school holidays. His parents both passed away about 10 years ago and he was staying with his grandparents in the Gakhunwana village, between Mafikeng and Vryburg.

The accident happened last Friday while he was in a car with this uncle and two others. Letlhogonolo passed away at the scene while the others sustained light injuries.

“He was like our child. We are very shocked. All his teammates are extremely sad and most will return from their homes to attend the funeral. He was a very good boy and we expected so much from him,” says Pio.

Letlhogonolo represented North West and Athletic Central North West in track and field as well as cross-country. A highlight of his year was when he finished 5th at the SA cross-country champs held in September.

The funeral will be held on Friday in the Gakhunwana village and will start at 7am.
