#Comrades2025 to introduce two starts

The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) is excited to announce a change for the 2025 Comrades Marathon with the introduction of two race starts. This innovative approach aims to enhance the race experience for all participants in the world’s biggest, oldest and most famous ultramarathon; and ensure a smoother, safer, more efficient event.

For the first time in the history of The Ultimate Human Race, there will be a separate start for each of the two groups of athletes in this year’s race. However, they will both take place at the traditional Pietermaritzburg City Hall which is the start venue of the 49th Comrades Marathon Down Run.

To accommodate the two starts, the race will feature staggered start times, in keeping with the increasing field of participants, year on year. The first wave of runners will begin at 05h45, followed by the second wave 15 minutes later at 06h00. This staggered approach will help manage the flow of runners and reduce congestion on the course.

To ensure the ongoing great experience and world-class safety measures that have become synonymous with the Comrades Marathon, many experts have been consulted and lots of behind the scenes work has been undertaken which have led to this year’s two start decision.

Various race start options have also been explored at great length by the CMA’s Race Advisory Committee with the change expected to enhance safety and allow runners to maintain their pace more comfortably. The two starts are designed to improve the overall runner experience by providing more space and reducing bottlenecks at the beginning of the race.

CMA General Manager, Alain Dalais says, “This change reflects our commitment to continuously improving the safety measures and the overall race experience for our participants. We believe the two starts will provide a safer, more enjoyable and efficient race day for everyone involved."

The CMA encourages all participants to familiarize themselves with the new starting procedures and to plan accordingly. Previous seeding will not be relevant and more specific communications around the process will be issued as soon as possible. Owing to ongoing roadworks, there is a delay in the finalisation of the Comrades route but this will be confirmed timeously in order for athletes to plan properly.

Detailed information will be provided on the official Comrades Marathon website and through various communication channels, including updates on seeding, qualifying and cut-offs.

The 98th Comrades Marathon takes place on Sunday, 8 June 2025. This is the 49th Down Run, starting at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall and finishing 12 hours later at Durban’s People’s Park.

Comrades Marathon Novice Seminars for First-Time Runners

The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) is pleased to announce a series of Novice Seminars specifically designed to support first-time participants of the 98th Comrades Marathon. These seminars aim to provide invaluable insights, guidance, and encouragement to ensure a successful and enjoyable race experience for novice runners.

The seminars will feature the Comrades Coach, dietitian and other professionals who will share their knowledge on various aspects of the race. Topics will include training tips, race day strategies, injury prevention, and mental preparation.

Novice runners will receive comprehensive information on what to expect on race day, including logistics, hydration, nutrition, and pacing. This preparation will help alleviate any pre-race anxieties and ensure participants are well-prepared for the challenges ahead.

The seminars will include interactive question-and-answer sessions, allowing novices to seek personalized advice and address any concerns they may have. This direct engagement with experts and experienced runners will provide valuable support and encouragement.

The Novice Seminars offer an excellent opportunity for first-time runners to connect with fellow participants, fostering a sense of camaraderie and support. Additionally, the sessions will feature inspirational stories from past Comrades Marathon finishers, highlighting their journeys and achievements.

The schedule is as follows:

The Cape Town leg of the SPAR Women’s Challenge series incorporating the SPAR Grand Prix is sold out.

The race, which is capped at 16 000, will take place in Greenpoint on Sunday, 30 March, with the apt theme #Twenty20Thrive.

This is the opening race of the prestigious SPAR Grand Prix 10km series which has attracted a top women’s entry from not only South Africa but the continent.

Women from the Mother City and surrounds, who did not leave it till number 99 to enter, will take up the challenge, running or walking South Africa’s ‘Most Beautiful’ race along the Atlantic Seaboard. The 10km race and 5km Fun Run starts and finishes in Greenpoint.

“We are extremely excited to once again be hosting this fabulous event in our beautiful Mother City,” says Elsabe van Zyl-Felix, Advertising Manager for SPAR Western Cape and Namibia. “We look forward to welcoming our elite athletes, as well as our loyal ladies who come and run or walk the Challenge with their friends. Our theme for the race encourages everyone to take the best versions of themselves, move on - and thrive.”

Entrants can collect their race packs with their race numbers at their selected Sportsman’s Warehouse on Friday 28 March and Saturday 29 March. No collections will take place on race day.

Top 3 Finishers Cape Town 2024

To avoid congestion in the Greenpoint area, the City encourages that entrants park at the Civic Centre and catch the MyCiti bus (using their MyConnect Transport card ) to the start. Parking will be open from 05:00. Security will be in place and participants will not be charged to park there.  The first bus departs at 6:06 am from the Civic Centre to Granger Bay / Waterfront.

Cape Town’s Mayor, Mr Geordin Hill – Lewis, will shoot the start gun for the 10 km Race at 7:00. The 10 km walk follows at 7:15 and the 5 km Fun Run at 7:40. There will be batch starts for all distances.

The ethos of the SPAR Group is to support the communities in which they trade. The SPAR Women’s Challenge enables SPAR to donate to worthy charities in their region that support women. This year, via the SPAR Petals project, SPAR Western Cape will donate sanitary pads to two organizations, Against Period Poverty and the Boland Cricket Veterans’ Dignity Programme. As part of the Group’s End GBV campaign, the Saartjie Baartman Centre, based in Manenberg, will also benefit, as will Nonceba in Khayelitsha.

According to Van Zyl – Felix, another facet of the event’s commitment to charitable causes, is the goody bag that participants receive on completion of the race. “This year we have commissioned the Alta du Toit Centre, which plays a valuable role in the all-inclusive care and development of adults with an intellectual disability, to pack our goody bags.”

Popular rapper, Snotkop will entertain at the prize-giving after the event. In addition to substantial category prizes for the top runners, fabulous lucky draw prizes are up for grabs. Those that stay for the prize-giving after the run, stand the chance to win a grand lucky draw prize of R 30 000 worth of SPAR vouchers.

As part of an exciting development for this year’s SPAR Grand Prix series, the SPAR Group has announced Hyundai Automative South Africa as the new national vehicle sponsor of the series. One lucky woman (older than 18) will walk away from the race the owner of a brand-new Hyundai Exter valued at R245 000.
