Spar Womans Race 10km Pretoria

Nedbank running club’s Tadu Nare heads strong team for Tshwane Spar

Defending Spar Grand Prix series champion Tadu Nare from the Nedbank running club will be out in action on Saturday as the Spar Tshwane 10km kicks off from Supersport Park in Centurion at 14:00 and will do so with a strong Nedbank running club team.

Coming off a recent win of the Durban Spar 10km in an impressive 31:14, Nare is looking forward to the Tshwane edition as she attempts to reclaim her overall title after missing out on the first leg of the series in Cape Town. “With the rules saying 4 races count, I am still in contention to defend my title and that is one of the goals for this year,” said Nare.

She will be joined on Saturday by no less than 30 fellow Nedbank running club teammates with the likes of Nedbank running club Kenya’s Shelmith Muiriki and Faith Kiptoo looking to challenge the Ethiopian who has made the Spar Grand Prix series home, never finishing off the podium in all events since 2018.

Comrades Marathon stars Charne Bosman, Galaletsang Mekgoe and Deanne Laubscher will also be out in action on the streets of Centurion looking for a fast performance.

“We generally always have a big team at the Tshwane leg of the Spar Grand Prix series and this year is no exception,” said Nedbank running club national team manager Nick Bester. Also out in action and looking for good performances will be our top elite age group athletes, including our Comrades womans veteran team, senior winners team and in the grandmaster section will be 1992 Comrades Marathon winner Frances van Blerk.

Down in Durban on Sunday, the Totalsports 10km ladies’ race will take place and Nedbank running club will be represented by the duo of Diniya Abaraya and triathletes Bridget Theunissen and Mikhaela De Oliveira who will all be looking for some fast times. Abaraya is one of the favorites given her 32:24 10km personal best from this year’s Spar ladies 10km in Cape Town whilst De Oliveira is the niece of Comrades Marathon gold medalists Grace and Eloi De Oliveira.

Nedbank running club’s Lucky Mohale wins prestigious Phalaborwa 21

On a very warm Saturday afternoon where temperatures hit 30 degrees Celsius, Nedbank running club’s Lucky Mohale produced a scintillating performance on the streets of Phalaborwa to take victory in the 2024 Foskor Half Marathon ahead of a quality field.

Mohale, who boasts a personal best of 1:01:08 in the half marathon which he set 12 years ago in Cape Town, took the race on from 9km where only 2016 Rio Olympian Sibusiso Nzima could cover the move. Just on 14km, multiple national champion Precious Mashele caught the duo. The trio stayed the same until 2km where Mohale made a push for home and as a former winner of the race, used the course knowledge to record his 3rd Foskor victory in a time of 01:04:29.

“I am very happy to win this race today, especially because of the conditions,” said Mohale afterwards. “To be honest I came here with no expectations as all I wanted to do was finish because at this race people can collapse because it is so hot.” Mohale picked up R50 000 for his efforts. “I will use this money to finish construction because I am building a house in my village so it will go a long way to completing that.”

Behind him, Nedbank running club teammate Namakoe Nkhasi who is on a return to form finished 7th in 1:05:42. Comrades Marathon 2024 runner up Dan Matshalwe also had a good day out getting back into training finishing in 1:08:54.

In the women’s race it was a close one with Nedbank running club Ethiopia’s Getenesh Agafew finishing on the podium in 3rd in a credible 1:15:24, only 20 seconds behind race winner Karabo Mailula. A star of the future, Agafew also claimed the first junior title.

Nedbank running club’s Mosiako shooting for the stars

After a 4th sub-28:00 clocking over 10km thanks to his 3rd place 27:54 clocking at the Durban Run Your City 10km, Nedbank running club green dream team athlete Thabang Mosiako looks to broaden his horizon this year by aiming for another sub 60min clocking over the half marathon distance and perhaps even a marathon in the not-too-distant future.

A former national champion over both the 5000m on the track and the half marathon distance on the road, Mosiako had a great return to form last weekend with his 27:54 performance. “I had a great run and can shat I just enjoyed me race,” said Mosiako. “Everything went according to plan, and I am really happy that I recorded my 4th sub-28:00 time over 10km.”

With a 27:45 personal best for 10km which Mosiako achieved with a 6th place finish at the Urban Trail de Lille 10km in France, Mosiako had a great 2023 which saw him finish an amazing 6th at the World Half Marathon Championships in Latvia where he clocked a 59:52 and led the South African team home to a team competition medal.

“My plan for now is to record another sub 1 hour clocking over the half marathon but I am not that much in a rush to achieve it currently.” Coached by South African Olympic Games team marathon coach Michael Mbambani and basing himself in Gqeberha, Mosiako also hints that a marathon may also be on the cards in the not-so-distant future.

“I am going to continue with the 10km and half marathon distance this year with a goal of improving on the times but later on this year I am also looking to try and run my first marathon,” said Mosiako. With both a great system in place and a lot of speed in his legs, Mosiako could well go on to become one of the greats in South African distance running.

Being part of the Nedbank running club green team and assisting Mosiako in achieving these goals is made a lot easier thanks to the club’s generous sponsors. “I am so highly appreciative of the support that I get from the Nedbank running club,” said Mosiako. “Apart from the team itself, all of the sponsors are treating me like a champ, and I want to say thank you to all of them for the support to the team.”

The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) is saddened by the passing of former Comrades Marathon runner and elite club manager, Mr Dana Coetzee.

Dana made an indelible impact on road running in South Africa, inspiring an entire era of top athletes with his passion for the sport which was matched by his sterling management of running clubs, winners, gold medallists and other athletes.

Both runners and road running officials can attest to Dana’s friendly demeanour, exemplary conduct and love for the Comrades Marathon. Dana completed 20 editions of The Ultimate Human Race, earning his double laurels in the esteemed Comrades Green Number Club.

Running in Permanent Number 1273, he ran his first Comrades Marathon in 1980, and going on to earn 12 Silver, 4 Bill Rowan and 4 Bronze medals. He achieved his Comrades personal best in a time of 6:33:15 in 1988.

CMA Chairperson, Mqondisi Ngcobo says, "Dana leaves behind a lasting legacy of running the great race; as well as managing elite running clubs and top athletes who have achieved amazing things. His passion and drive for the sport we all love so much has seen him drive athletes to sheer accomplishment. He was a motivational force that will inspire the best in all of us. "

Ngcobo adds, "On behalf of the CMA Board, Staff and Race Organising Committee, we convey our heartfelt condolences to the Coetzee family on your huge loss. We wish you all strength during this trying time and remember the great contribution of a wonderful man to road running and the many lives that he touched."

Chairperson of the former Murray & Roberts Running Club, Ed Jardim says, “Dana Coetzee was known and loved by many in the running community. An accomplished runner himself, he dedicated much of his life to the sport, and as a result, would go to a race event and be able to greet every second person. He was incredibly well known and a passionate fellow runner. Running and those involved in the sport, both athlete and organiser, was an integral part of Dana's life and he committed himself to the betterment of it all. He will be missed! Rest in peace Dana!”

Former CMA Race & Operations Manager, Rowyn James says, “I have known Dana for many years through our respective running careers and common crossover within the road running fraternity. I got to work closely with him during the advent of the Murray and Roberts pro running team where he was team manager and admired his passion and professionalism into getting the team established, particularly on the women’s side which became a dominant team within the road running circuit. His care, concern, empathy and unwavering support towards the athletes was a standout feature and a hallmark of his personality. A great loss to the sport, go well my friend, you ran a great and brave race.”
