Club Athlete of the month

Decision was made to choose two Club athletes for the month of June ’24. These athletes were Helene van Rooyen and Michelle Spies with their performances at the 2024 Comrades marathon. Well done to both ladies with their achievements.

Helene on the right and Michelle on the left with Comrades champion Gerda Steyn.

Cross Country – Chairperson Beaulah Valentin

The Cross-Country season started on the 4th of May 2024 and will end on the 7th of September 2024 with the ASA championships which will be held in the Vaal Triangle for the first time in the history.

Three leagues were completed and Nedbank Running Club AVT was well represented at these meetings.

  • League One – 22 athletes from our club attend the meeting
  • League Two – 28 athletes from our club attend the meeting
  • League Three – 33 athletes from our club attend the meeting

League Four was held on Saturday the 6th of July ’24 and we will inform you on this in our next newsletter.

Many podium places were achieved during the first three meetings and we are proud of each athlete who participates.

The dates for the remaining leagues and championships is as follows:

  • 20 July 2024 at venue TBA and the hosting club will be Future Champs AC
  • 28 July 2024 at Kollegepark Primary School and the hosting club will be Nedbank Running Club Vanderbijlpark
  • 3 August 2024 will be the AVT championships and more information on the venue and hosting club will be communicated when available

As noted, our club will be responsible to host the league on 28 July 2024. Please come and support your club at the event so that it can be the same success as in 2023. We really need some helpers to set up the course on Thursday the 26th of July ’24. If you want to assist, please contact Beaulah. We will publish more information when available.

Road Running – Chairperson Joggie van der Sandt

ASA 21.1 km Championships – 1st of June 2024

Two athletes of our club represented Athletics Vaal Triangle at the 21.1 km championships in Qheberha. It was run in terrible conditions with strong winds and rain but still our athletes Sampie Mokgatla and Tsietsi Mokoena made us proud.

o Unfortunately, some athletes either did not start or finish.

The following three athletes deserve some special attention in this month’s newsletter

Coenie Herbst

Coenie ran his first Comrades marathon in 1991. He did compete in almost every Comrades from then except for the years 1996, 2008, 2020 and 2021 (Covid). His collection of medals consists of four Bill Rowan medals (Comrades marathon completed in under nine hours), 25 Bronze medals (Comrades marathon completed in under eleven hours) and one Vic Clapman (Comrades marathon completed in under twelve hours.

Congratulations Coenie on this excellent achievement.

Michelle Spies

Michelle ran in her second Comrades marathon and she missed her silver medal with four minutes. An extraordinary achievement if you consider that she is visually impaired and ran unassisted.

We can only salute Michelle on this achievement.

Helene van Rooyen

One of the success stories of this years Comrades was the achievement of Helene van Rooyen. She ran a silver medal despite an injury, Plantar Fasciitis. She achieved the 17th place in her age category (40-49), 484th overall and the 38th woman in the race. Helene was one of only a handful athletes from the Vaal Triangle who achieved a silver medal and the only woman who has achieved that.

Helene on the right with Gerda Steyn and Michelle Spies

We are immensely proud of you Helene
