Nedbank hosts ‘must visit’ spectator spot
2015 Comrades Marathon Goes Green

Nedbank will once again show their appreciation to 2015 Comrades Marathon runners and their supporters by staging the popular Nedbank Supporters Spot and Nedbank Green Mile.

Nedbank, a major sponsor of the Comrades Marathon since 2002, will be bringing fun and flair to the 90th Comrades Marathon on Sunday, 31 May 2015. The prominent financial institution will host the official spectator spot along the route in a grand, enormously entertaining, eco-friendly Green Mile with an electrifying parade of colourful characters, carnival-style floats and more.
Spectators can prepare for a Camperdown make-over as the iconic, award-winning #NedbankGreenMile transforms the grey and dusty streets into a road running celebration on Comrades race day.

Aptly themed ‘Comrades Carnival’ in celebration of the 90th Comrades Marathon, the 2015 #NedbankGreenMile is the place to be at along the up-run’s 87km route.
Nedbank Group Sponsorship Manager, Patrick Baransky says, ‘From humble beginnings as a water spot 34 years ago, the #NedbankGreenMile has evolved into an unforgettable, award-winning, inspirational, family-friendly zone where everyone can be part of the Comrades experience.’
Kids and the young at heart will delight in an action-packed Kids Fun Zone where entertainment includes face painting, balloon artists and jumping castles, plus much more. Runner’s supporters will also be able to keep up with the race action from the large grandstand which will be home to a large screen TV airing live footage and race commentary throughout the day.

A troupe of acrobats, jugglers, stilt walkers, giant puppets, Cancan and Salsa dancers will be parading through the mile-long spectator zone throughout the day, dazzling all in their wake, while local marimba, steel drum and marching bands set the carnival beat. There will also be DJs, flamboyant floats, a ‘kissing’ booth, shoot the hoop recycle bins and a secure kids zone with a jumping castle, face painting, arts and crafts and puppets; plus many more surprises.

Baransky adds, ‘In Nedbank’s commitment to supporting the local community, all proceeds from food and beverage sales along the #NedbankGreenMile will go to local schools, charities and churches. There will also be an interactive recycling programme in place throughout the spectator zone.’
So ignite your imagination, dress the part and come be part of the Comrades Carnival at this year’s #NedbankGreenMile, which will be open from 08h00 – 14h30 on race day, with free entry.  An easy access car park next to the N3 race route with parking directional signage will be provided.

Comrades Marathon Road Closures & Roadwork's
The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) anticipates high traffic volumes in the early hours of Comrades Race Day – Sunday, 31 May 2015 - as thousands of runners make their way to the Start Venue at the Durban City Hall.

We ask all runners to be mindful of the increased number of motorists heading to the same destination and to make sure to arrive in time.

URGENT TRAFFIC NOTICE

Due to the large numbers and to avoid congestion on the N3, supporters are strongly advised to travel directly through the Nedbank Green Mile in Camperdown and then onto the finish at The Cricket Oval in Pietermaritzburg.

DRIVERS WHO STOP ON THE NATIONAL OR MAIN ROADS ARE LIABLE FOR PROSECUTION BY THE AUTHORITIES AND VEHICLES WILL BE TOWED AWAY TO CLEAR THE ROUTE.

Qualifying Details
Comrades Dispensation for Non-Submission of Qualifying Details
With less than 11 days to the 90th celebration of the world’s biggest and best ultra-marathon, the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) has announced a special lifeline to those runners who failed to submit their qualifying details to the CMA by the deadline – 4 May 2015. They will be granted dispensation until Thursday, 21 May 2015 at 16h30.

CMA General Manager, Chris Fisher says, ‘In line with the CMA’s Vision, we plan to make the 90th Comrades Marathon even more inclusive. We have therefore decided to grant a dispensation to those runners who did not submit their qualifying details to the CMA despite several requests to do so.’

However, these runners must take note that this dispensation comes with limitations. These late changes and having to chase up runners for this information places tremendous pressure on our office staff and volunteers. It may necessitate a dedicated queue at the Durban Registration Venue at the Comrades Expo, specifically for all those who have missed the cut-off date, so that they do not delay the registration of other runners.

This will only be available at the Durban Registration Venue at the Comrades Expo and not in Pietermaritzburg. Furthermore, they will have to start at the back of the race, as the allocation of seeding batches has already closed.

In order to secure their place on the Start line, these specific runners have been sent an email and SMS with all necessary instructions and must respond by close of business on Thursday, 21 May 2015 at 16h30. Any runner who misses Thursday’s deadline will not be able to register at the Durban Expo.

Fisher says, ‘We have been inundated with both appeals and threats from runners who missed the deadline to be allowed to run the celebratory edition of the race on Sunday, 31 May 2015, including some incredibly original excuses from our runners as to why they had failed to submit these important details.’

Fisher adds, ‘One of our most important stakeholders are our runners, hence we have decided to allow this dispensation in line with the 90th Comrades celebration and a brand personality of empathy, character, humility and togetherness. At the end of the day Comrades is about the spirit that accompanies the race. Comrades help other comrades. The 90th Comrades Marathon promises to be the best yet and we look forward to seeing more runners on the Start line.’

CMA Chairman Macdonald Chitja added, “This decision was taken with only the interest of our runners at heart and allowing them to “Be Part of It” in our 90th celebratory race. We take cognizance of the added pressure this brings and take this opportunity to thank our General Manager and Race Director for supporting and implementing the decision, notwithstanding the added work the decision brings to the team.”
