Newsflash

Two Oceans Marathon arrangements for the Nedbank Running Club.

We will have a huge marquee tent for all our Nedbank running club athletes to come and have a nice meal and drinks with their fellow club mates after the race.

The tent will be exactly on the same spot as last year-On the Western side (mountain side) of the finishing strait about 150 meters before the finish line next to the footbridge which can be used to go to the inside area where the prize giving podium will be standing.
In doubt-just look where you will see the NEDBANK feather flags.

We are happy to announce that SPUR will be looking after our hunger and thirst needs –you will all be entitled to a hamburger or chicken burger as well as cold drinks and beer.
We will cater for all Nedbank Running club athletes that entered for the Two Oceans Marathon.

We will print food and drink vouchers that will be distributed to all Nedbank Running club members as they leave the finish area on the day.

Runners proceed then to the Nedbank hospitality marquee where they will get their burgers and drinks.

There will also be chairs and tables inside the tent to rest your tired legs and watch the other runners finish the race.

Special Nedbank Two Oceans long sleeve t-shirts are ready and we courier it overnight today to all your respective clubs –just ask your chairman on Tuesday 19th April for yours.

It looks as if the majority of Nedbank Two Oceans athletes want to make Forrester Arms their final destination after the run to reward themselves-See you all there.

We hope that all of you will have a fantastic run and may every one run their personal best times on the day.

NEWSFLASH!!!!!!!!! 2 x Two Oceans return air tickets for R2500-00 per person to buy from Nedbank offices.

Nedbank Athletes keep on flying the Green flag.

Nedbank Running Club Central North West runner David Ngakane surprised a strong international field of runners including a couple of top Zimbabwean runners in the likes of Phillip Bandawe to finish third in the Pyongyang Marathon this past weekend.

David running in the pack in Pyongyang Marathon in Nedbank colors.I spoke to David and he replied-“It was bitterly cold for me as I came out of a sunny South Africa but I just decided to not disappoint myself and my club again like in the South African marathon championships earlier in February this year. I just keep on pushing and finished the marathon in 2 hours 15 minutes and 31 seconds. I am very happy now because this fast time that I ran can easily put me in the S. A. team for the world championships later this year.”

The race was won by the Russian Oleg Marusin in 2 hours 13 minutes and 58 seconds with Kenyan runner Morris Mwangu second in 2 hours 14 minutes and 51 seconds.

Michael Wardian (born April 12, 1974) is an American marathoner and ultra-marathoner. He won the 2008, 2009 and 2010 US 50 km championships.[1] In 2008, he won the U.S. National 100 km championship.[2] Wardian also is the 2007 JFK 50 Mile winner, and won the National Marathon in Washington D.C. three consecutive years (2006–2008), and in 2010 and 2011.[3][4][5][6]

Wardian is known for the vast number of marathons he participates in. During a 45 day span in 2006, Wardian won four out of five marathons he raced.[7] In 2007, he ran 13 marathons (not including ultra-marathons), and seven marathons in a span of nine weeks (winning three).[8] March 2008 saw Wardian win the National Marathon in Washington D.C. on a Saturday, and then finish third at a marathon in Knoxville, Tennessee the very next day.[9] In 2008, Wardian ran a total of 53 races.[10] In addition to the national and global races he participates in, Wardian can frequently be seen running in local races around the Washington D.C. area.[11]

Wardian held the world record for fastest marathon while pushing a jogging stroller from May 2007 to November 2009.[3][12] He set the record at the 2007 Frederick Marathon with a time of 2:42:21. The record was broken at a duel at the 2009 Route 66 marathon by Zac Freudenburg, whose 2:32:10 time beat Wardian's 2:34:37 time.[12]

Wardian also was a former record holder of the fastest Marathon on a treadmill.[3] He qualified and participated in the 2004 and 2008 Men's Olympic Marathon trials.[7][13] Some of the notable ultra-marathons Wardian has completed include the Marathon des Sables, the Western States Endurance Run, the Himalayan 100 Mile Stage Race and the Vermont 100 Mile Endurance Run.[10][14][15] The United States Track and Field Association named Wardian the 2008 and 2009 Ultra Runner of the year.[10][16][17]

In November 2009, Wardian finished third in the IAU World 50K championships held on the island of Gibraltar.[18] In 2010, Wardian finished third at the Marathon des Sables in 23 hours 1 minute 3 seconds, which was the best time ever by an American.[19] In February 2011, the International Association of Ultrarunners named Wardian its inaugural Athlete of the Year.[20]

On July 1, 2010, Wardian set the record for fastest indoor 200-meter track marathon record, with a time of 2:27:21.[21]

When asked in April 2009 why he competes in so many races, Wardian said:

A lot of people say, "Oh, you could be a 2:12 guy or a 2:14 guy if you just focused on one race a year, or two races a year and really built up." And I think the counter argument is that you could get hurt and you wouldn't have any races a year. There are so many opportunities out there and, I love to toe the line. I love to see what I can do and just push the limits and try and experiment with myself. I like that people can look at me, and say, "Wow, if that guy can do 13 marathons a year and do pretty well maybe I can do one." I think a lot of people can relate to that. Like, that guy works a real job. He's not a professional runner.[22]

[edit] Personal

Wardian is a graduate of Oakton High School and Michigan State University, where he played for the lacrosse team.[11] Wardian did not run competitively until after college.[23] He lives in Arlington, Virginia, is a vegeterian,[19] and works as an International Shipbroker. Wardian charted the cargo that was on the Maersk Alabama when it was hijacked in April 2009.[22] He is married with two children.[13]

OLD MUTUAL TWO OCEANS MARATHON ATTRACTS A TOP FIELD OF RUNNERS

The increased prize money at this year’s Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon has enticed a number of top local and international athletes to compete for line honours this Saturday 23 April.

Eight of last year’s top 10 men have entered, including last year’s winner Mabhutile Lebopo, runner-up Moeketsi Mosuhli and third placed Teboho Sello all coming from Lesotho.  The 2010 event saw a total domination by the tiny mountain kingdom and they are back to try the same again this year.

Two time Comrades winner Stephen Muzhingi, who placed fourth last year, will also be hoping to better his position.  Mabhutile’s brother Warinyane has also confirmed his entry.  He was fifth last year.  Other runners to watch include Kenyans Chebbi Kemboi, who has a marathon PB of 2:12 and Kipkemoi Kiplimo.

The increase in prize money by close to 50% will mean that the top male and female runners in the 56km ultra event each take home R250 000 for their efforts.  The new prize money schedule makes it one of the highest paying ultra events in the country and offers top runners a real incentive to focus on winning the event this year.

In the women’s ultra event, seven of last year’s top 10 have confirmed their entries, including the Nurgalieva twins who will have some tough competition this year in the form of previous winners Simone Staicu who won in 2003 and Madina Biktagirova who was the oldest winner of the event in 2007 at age 42.

Russian athlete Marina Myshlyanova, who was third at Comrades last year, has also entered the ultra.  Flying the South African flag will be Riana van Niekerk (6th in 2010), Farwa Mentoor, Joanna Thomas (7th in 2010) and Gladys Lukhwareni, who makes a return to road running after a two-year ban for taking an illegal substance.  Mamorallo Tjoka who placed third in the Two Oceans half marathon last year, will be running the ultra for only the second time.

“The increase in prize money will hopefully provide the top runners with the incentive to focus on winning the ultra, as well as encouraging them to have a serious attempt at the respective course records, which were set over 20 years ago,” added Rowyn James, race director.

James added that while the prize money has always been considered generous, they wanted to take it to the next level in order to attract some of road running’s top names.  The second and third place male and female runners will each receive R125 000 and R65 000 respectively.  Total prize money on offer for the event is just under R1.5-million.  Last year’s first prize winners received R150 000, second place R75 000 and third R50 000.

Lushapo April is back to defend his title in the half marathon but will have his work cut out for him from the likes of previous winner Luwis Masunda, Sibusiso Nzema and Xoliswa Twali.  Kenyan Daniel Yegon could also pose a threat to April’s title defence.  Stephen Mokoka was on the entry list but pulled out last week as he has decided to run in Japan.

The women’s half marathon will also be an exciting one to watch as five of the top 10 from last year will be at the start line, including defending champion and course record holder Rene Kalmer and second placed Irvette van Blerk, both of whom are running exceptionally well.  Past winners Charné Bosman and Halalia Johannes will also provide some tough competition, together with Annerine van Schalkwyk.

A record field of close to 23 000 runners are expected to line up on Saturday, with just over 14 000 taking part in the half marathon – the biggest field in the event’s history.  The ultra marathon has also attracted a large field of just under 9 000, not a record field but certainly one of the biggest fields in the ultra.
