The Van Wettens Nite Race finally took place on THursday 3 February in fine weather. After the heavy rains of the past weeks clear skys were welcomed by all and contributed to a fair size field and the enjoyment of all.
The course this year was different from last year so the times cannot be compared although this years time was incredible. Last years race was won by Enos Matalane from Gauteng Striders in a time of 31.08 and our Ntutuko was second in time of 32.33.
The ladies race last year was won by Kim Laxton in a time of 38.35 and again our Noria Sibande was second. in a time of 43.39.
Last year was a record entry of 750 participant but we were really happy about the entries this year of 570 as the race was postponed and then we had to stage it on a thursday which is not the usual day of the week that night races are stage.
We had business teams as well as school teams who took part in the 4.9km fun run team event.
The junior team event was won by Laeveld Laer Skool 11/u team and the senior school team prize went to Penryn 1. The business event was won by Electro systems Grey team.
We would like to thank Van Wettens for their continued support of this event. This is a family affair where young and old can take part and enjoy our beautiful suburb. This is also a serious road race in which top athletes compete. Van Wettens have again offered to suppose an athlete for the year and this sponsorship includes entry into both local and national races like city to city and comrades, transportation to these races and some new kit like shoes and track suits will be bought to assist the athlete to reach his greatest potential. We have selected Bright Kenneth Mabuza to be the recipient of this wonderful opportunity. He is a developing runner who has been a member of Nedbank LVCC for 3 years and after last years Comrades results we knew this man was someone to watch. This most generous sponsorship on the part of Van Wettens shows their continued community support and commitment to developing the talent in our area. Nedbank Lvcc is proud and grateful to be associated with Van Wettens.
