Nedbank running club Comrades star Piet Wiersma to race in Durban
September 27, 2024
2024 Comrades Marathon winner and Nedbank running club green dream team athlete Piet Wiersma will be stepping down form his usual ultra distances to the speedy 10km when he takes part in the Hollywood Bets 10km in Durban on Sunday.

Wiersma has been training hard in Kaptagat in Kenya, a running Mecca that Wiersma is no stranger to, having trained there earlier this year which saw him go on to win the Comrades Marathon up run after finishing 2nd last year.

“I’m looking forward to racing the 10km on Sunday together with some of my other Nedbank running club teammates,” said Wiersma who is using the event as preparation towards a marathon.

“I’ll be running Valencia Marathon in December so this race is all about sharpening up and getting the speed in.” Nedbank running club teammate Sibusiso Madikizela who was formerly from KZN but now resides in Cape Town will be setting a pace of between 2:58-2:55 per km and if things feel alright, will look at topping the pace towards the end.

“It’s great to have Piet out in action again and in a province that he knows very well,” said Nick Bester, national team manager of the Nedbank running club and former Comrades Marathon winner himself.  “Up front we will have the likes of Nedbank running club speedsters like Thabang Mosiako so don’t expect a win from Piet but if he can get under 30:00 that will be a great performance for him and also a good indicator that his marathon prep is going well.”

The Hollywood Bets Durban 10km starts at 07:00 on Sunday 29 September from the Hollywood Bets Kings Park outer fields.
