His 2hour 13 minutes & 18 seconds was good enough for his second qualification standard required for the Olympics, having met the Olympic qualifying standard late last year when he clocked a fast 2 hour and 10 minutes and 43 seconds for 6th place in the Valencia Marathon in Spain. His consistency must surely make Ngamole a near certainty for ASA and SASCOC selection to London and proves he is ready to represent his country in August.
Said Ngamole of his morning, “I was running at the front of the race with a pack of runners that included Gert Thys, Lucky Mohale, Othaniel Phahlane and Nedbank Team mate David Ngakane. At the 12 kilometre mark I realised that I felt strong and I left them behind and never looked back. Nobody was able to challenge me and I just kept a fast grinding pace for the reminder of the race. I was honoured to represent my club Nedbank, who look after us 12months of the year & hope I repaid their faith in me."
Coolboy earned himself a 'Cool' R100 000-00 for the win, as well as a R30 000-00 from the NRC.
The women’s race was won by Charne Bosman from Gauteng North in a somewhat disappointed 2 hours and 41 minutes and 51 seconds.
South Africa’s leading marathon ladies, Rene Kalmer and Tanith Maxwell were not on the starting line in George.
