This past weekend was fairly quiet on the race front but late Saturday afternoon a couple of us heard about the Mtunzini 16km Bush Challenge just before Richards Bay up the North Coast. We decided to leave very early and drive the
90 minute journey to see what the race was all about.
All I can say is that was the best race I’ve ever done! I recommend anyone who enjoys trail running and beautiful scenery to mark it in the calendar for next year! The scenery was just amazing, mostly single track running and then about a 1km stretch on the beach which was tough as the wind was howling and the sand was fairly soft even by the water’s edge but then we were back onto the single track which was nice and sheltered. We passed ‘Crocodile Creek’, climbed up a couple of steep wooden stairs up onto a bridge and then were back onto the single track. There were a couple of stretches of tar road but all in all not much more than a couple of km’s.
The beauty of this trail run was that it was not really technical it was just awesome single track, still very challenging as there was a lot of stair climbing and descending, beautiful beach and lake scenery and best of all great organisation with water points every 3km’s providing water, coke, bananas, sweets and biscuits!
