Nedbank Running Club athletes secure podium finishes on road and cross country
September 1, 2021
If the past weekend was anything to go by, races are coming back and the Nedbank running club has returned to where it was before, on top of podiums! It was yet another successful weekend as various provinces hosted their provincial cross country championships and in Gqeberha, the NMB choose to challenge 10km road race was held.

In that race, Andile Motwana found a welcome return to the podium finishing 3rd in 31:32. In the women’s race, the dynamic Nedbank RC duo of Kelly van Vliet and Ntombesintu Mfunzi secured podium finishes with their 2nd and 3rd placed finishes in 37:01 and 37:11. The evergreen grandmaster Margie Saunders secured the grandmasters title running an amazing 45:45 at 67 years of age.

The Nedbank RC Soweto Development team faced bad weather in the Central Gauteng cross country championships that were held over the weekend at the Kagiso Stadium. Facing extremely strong winds, this did not deter the over 50 Nedbank RC athletes that attended the event.

Reatlegile Mosweu and Realeboga Smith finished the season unbeaten as they triumphed in the provincial Championships. It was a very close encounter for Tiyani Fourie who was dipped just at the finish line to lose a silver medal. “I am very happy with the way the runners ran today and for those who secured the automatic qualifying spots for the team to represent the province at the South African cross country championships which will be held in Durban,” said Nedbank RC Soweto development team coach Siyaya Khoza.

“The Nedbank RC athletes showed up when it mattered most to secure team spots for the national champs but we will just wait now to see the final team that should be announced soon.”

In Pretoria, Stella Marais fresh from her 10th place finish at the Spar Ladies 10km down in Pietermaritzburg was a runaway victor in the senior women’s race at the North Gauteng championships. 1992 Comrades Marathon winner Frances Van Blerk also took victory in the grandmasters race with teammate Ingrid Koster finishing 5th.

Further Nedbank RC athletes results from other provinces are listed in the below results section.

All eyes this weekend will be in Cape Town as the 2nd leg of the Spar Ladies 10km takes place with Nedbank RC athlete Tadu Nare looking to repeat her victory from last week and further her lead at the top of the grand prix standings.
