Nedbank Running Club Vaal Triangle clubhouse at Kollege Park Primary school (Glanville street) Vanderbilpark

Warm greetings to all Vanderbijlpark club members. The year 2023 is quickly running out, and with that another wonderful year of outstanding performances from all our athletes. I am sure that all our members had a year that they will not easily forget, and we are thankful that we had the privilege to have shared all your excellent performances with you. With this last newsletter for 2023 we will reflect on this year’s performances. We really hope that we as Nedbank Running Club Vanderbijlpark will repeat and will even better our performances in 2024.

Nedbank Running Club Vanderbijlpark once again ended 2023 as the club with the most members in the Vaal Triangle. This is truly special because of the competition from open school clubs and academies. This is proof that our members want to be associated with a winning club.

The clubhouse closed on the 5th of December 2023 and will re-open on Tuesday the 16th of January 2024. We want to wish our office bearers a deserved break and we know you will be back in 2024 with renewed energy.

Gerda Pretorius will handle all club related enquiries as well as all running gear. Gerda’s contact number is 072 209 9906. She will be available again at the clubhouse from Tuesday the 16th of January 2024 at 17:00. From thereon she will be on duty every Tuesday at the clubhouse from 17:00

Registration 2024

Registration can be done in the following manner:

 Members can register at the clubhouse on Tuesdays from 17:00 or they can register using the process set out below. Please remember that the clubhouse will only re-open from Tuesday the 16th of January 2024.

 

  • ASA as well as the Nedbank Running Club’s registration forms must be completed.
  • You can obtain the necessary forms for your 2024 registration by open the following attached links:

  • If you have problems obtaining the forms via the links, you are more than welcome to request these forms from me. Just sent your email address to johanstr2@gmail.com and the forms will gladly be forwarded to you.
  • Please complete all forms and email it with your proof of payment to the email address of Johan Strydom johanstr2@gmail.com.
  • The 2024 fees are available on the Nedbank Running Club registration form.
  • Suggestion from my side is to download the requested forms and complete it before you go to the Club to register. That will save you valuable time.
  • We depend on ASA for the 2024 numbers and will let our members know when it will be available for collection.

Time Trials

Please note: The last Time Trial for 2023 will be held on Tuesday the 12th of December 2023 and will only resume on Tuesday the 16th of January 2024 at 17:30. From thereon there will be weekly Time Trials on Tuesdays at 17:30.

Club Athlete of the month

The Club Athlete for September ’23 was Christiaan Lewis with his performance at the ASA Cross Country Championships where he obtained the Bronze medal in his age category.

The Club Athlete for November ’23 was Penny England for her excellent performances at the African Masters Championships which was held in Pretoria. Penny obtained 6 Gold Medals in all the items she participated in.

Congratulations to both of you who made our club proud.

 

Cross Country

We had a phenomenally successful 2023 season and athletes from our club performed well during the leagues, AVT championships and ASA championships in Gqeberha.

Great news for our athletes is that the 2024 ASA championships will be held in the Vaal Triangle and I am sure our athletes will represent the province on a large scale again.

Road Running

In 2024 we really want more of our athletes to represent our club, provincially during ASA championships and we really need your help to achieve that. We had two athletes who represented our club, provincially at all the ASA championships, and if we compare that to Cross Country and Track & Field, we could have done better on the Road. Our two outstanding Road Athletes during 2023 were Sampie Mokgatla and Tsietsi Mokoena. Tsietsi also obtained a Silver medal at the 2023 Comrades marathon.

 

Track & Field

We had another excellent year by our athletes and top-class performances were achieved.

 

  • During the ASA u/16-u/20 Championships which was held in Pietermaritzburg from the 23rd to the 25th of March 2023, AVT ended in 5th position with 11 medals obtained during the championships. Of these 11 medals, 4 medals came from our Nedbank athletes and all 4 medals were Gold medals

Our Gold medal winners during these championships were:

  1. Marli Dimond - Gold medal in the 800 meters
  2. Chardone Smidt - Gold medal in the 100 meters
  3. Ethan Olivier - Gold medal in the Triple Jump
  4. Anje Holtzhausen - Gold medal in the Hammer

Johanke de Villiers joined Nedbank Running Club Vanderbijlpark after the championships and she won the silver medal in the 400m at these championships.

  • During the ASA Senior championships which was held in Potchefstroom from the 29th of March to the 1st of April 2023, a total of 23 athletes represented AVT and of these 23, 10 were from Nedbank Running Club Vanderbijlpark.

Six medals were won by AVT of which 3 were won by Nedbank athletes. The medal winners were:

  • Chris van Niekerk – Silver medal in the Shotput
  • Chris van Niekerk – Bronze medal in the Discuss
  • Ethan Olivier – Bronze medal in the Triple Jump

The African Championships (CAA) u/18-u/20 took place from the 29th of April till the 3rd of May 2023 in Lusaka, Zambia and 4 AVT athletes were chosen to represent ASA at these championships. From these 4 athletes 3 were from Nedbank Running Club namely:

  1. Marli Dimond – 800m
  2. Chardone Smidt – 100m
  3. Anje Holtzhausen – Hammer

Sabata Kumalo was chosen by ASA to be the Team Manager.

Anje Holtzhausen won the Gold medal in the Hammer.

AVT Track & Field Leagues and Championships 2023

Five phenomenally successful leagues were hosted by AVT and the 2023 AVT championships. In all these leagues Nedbank Running Club Vanderbijlpark were well represented and they were amongst the top medal winners during the championships. Nedbank Running Club was also well represented at the Inter Provincial championships which was held in Secunda.

The following athletes earned medals at the AVT championships on the 18th of November ’23 in Sasolburg:

  • Leomand Jacobs – silver medal B9 Turbo Javelin
  • Ethan Schoeman – Bronze Medal B11 High Jump and Bronze Medal in the Long Jump
  • Leon Phyfer – Gold Medal B16 Long Jump, Gold Medal Triple Jump and Silver Medal in the High Jump
  • Willem Botha – Gold Medal B18 High Jump
  • Tinaishe Zidyana – Gold Medal B18 Triple Jump and Silver Medal in the High Jump
  • Lynne Heymans – Silver Medal G13 in the 200m, Silver medal in the Long Jump and Bronze Medal in the 100m
  • Unathi Dladla – Gold Medal M20 in the 200m and Silver medal in the 100m
  • Vinaldo Spamers – Silver Medal B16 Discus and Bronze Medal in the Shotput
  • Milane Snyman – Silver Medal G7 60m and Silver Medal 80m
  • Jazelle Van Zyl – Gold Medal G9 60m and Gold Medal 80m
  • Rochelle Wallace – Silver Medal G9 60m and Silver Medal 80m
  • Sienna Roos – Gold Medal G11 70mh and Bronze Medal in the Long Jump
  • Anke Raath – Gold Medal G13 70mh, Bronze medal Long Jump and Bronze Medal in the 200mh
  • Mione Frisby – Silver Medal G16 Shotput
  • Kayleigh Jansen van Vuren – Silver Medal G9 600m
  • Jaden Booysen – Gold Medal B16 300mh and Gold Medal 100mh
  • Calvin Putter – Bronze Medal B11 Shotput
  • Ethan Olivier – Gold Medal M20 Long Jump
  • Simon Tsilo – Gold Medal M25 Long Jump
  • Iwan Vermeulen – Gold Medal B11 Long Jump and Silver Medal 70mh
  • Divan Bezuidenhout – Bronze Medal B16 100mh
  • Dane Albrecht – Gold Medal G16 High Jump
  • Shaylee Schoeman – Bronze Medal G16 High Jump
  • Brenden Mocke – Gold Medal M20 Hammer

 

The following athletes represented Nedbank provincially at the Sub-Youth Inter Provincials in Secunda:

Masters Athletics 2023

Six athletes from AVT qualified for the SAMA Championships in Cape Town from the 4th to the 6th of May 2023 at Greenpoint stadium in Cape Town. Of these 6 athletes, 4 were from Nedbank Running Club Vanderbijlpark namely:

  1. Hannes Nel
  2. Le Roux van Tonder
  3. Liezl Bezuidenhout
  4. Braam Botes

Results for the SAMA Championships which was held in Cape Town from the 4th to the 6th of May 2023 at the Greenpoint stadium.

  1. Liezl Bezuidenhout won 2 silver medals
  2. Braam Botes won a Gold medal

Braam Botes qualified and was chosen to represent SAMA in the Africa Masters Championships in Pretoria. Unfortunately, due to illness he was not able to compete.

The Following athletes participated at the African Masters Track & Field Championships in Pretoria:

  • Liezl Bezuidenhout – obtaining the Bronze Medal in the 100m 50-54 age group and Medal Standards were met.
  • Louise Britz – obtaining the Gold Medal in the 4000m Cross Country 50-54 age group.
  • Penny England – obtaining Gold Medals in the following 6 items and National Color Standards and Medal Standards were met in all the items in the age group 80-84
