May 2017 Newsletter

Dear Club Member

This running year is certainly flying past us at quite a pace! We do hope that you are all achieving your own personal goals and that your preparations for the next big race are going well!

Two Oceans has come and gone and with it the ultra season in South Africa as many runners begin to taper down and those long runs turn into shorter and (for some) faster ones in preparation for the big C on 4 June 2017. To all those participating look after your body in the next 4 weeks to ensure you get to the start line well prepared and healthy.

Please do remember to stay visible out on the roads while training as we head into the winter months - wear as much reflective gear as you can and face oncoming traffic at all times !

Happy training !

Two Oceans Marathon

The club would like to congratulate all of our members who recently took part in the worlds most beautiful marathon in Cape Town. Whether you did the ultra marathon, the half or one of the trail runs we salute you on your achievement.

Nedbank Running Club made it a clean sweep with both the first male and female athletes.

Some interesting Nedbank Running Club Johannesburg stats:

- 155 finishers (90 in the ultra and 55 in the half marathon)

- 62 of these were ladies (21 in the ultra and 41 in the half marathon)

- Our top ladies finisher in the ultra marathon was Franci Myburgh in a time of 4h42m

- Our top mens finisher in the ultra marathon was Bongane Zwane in a time of 3h55

- Our top ladies finisher in the half marathon was Bodene Nienaber in a time of 1h37m

- Our top mens finisher in the half marathon was Mason Cranswick in a time of 1h29m

A huge thank you as well to Nick Bester (National Manager Nedbank Running Clubs), our sponsors and team for hosting what can only be labelled as one of the best club tents at the end of any race !

Again well done to all that participated!

Comrades Marathon

Its nearly upon us - the annual run that defines many a South African runner. This year is an up run from Durban City Hall to the new finsh venue at The Scottsville Race Course in Pietermaritzburg. The official distance this year is 86.73km which makes it one of the 'shortest' Comrades in recent years.

The club will once again be hosting a seconding table at around the 60km mark just before Camperdown.

Details on where you can drop off your goodies along with final instructions will be send out shortly.

Time Trials

In the last few weeks before Comrades as you reduce your mileage there is nothing better than keeping your body in peak shape by adding a couple of short tempo runs. Our weekly time trials at Modderfontein (Tuesdays) and George Lea Park Sports Clubs (Wednesdays) are perfectly suited for this. We start at 17h30 sharp - enjoy some great company and a run!

Please remember to wear reflective clothing - we will provide reflective vests for use during your time trial.

See you there!

We were also privileged to host over 20 junior runners from our Nedbank Soweto branch !

Thank you to all those that attended.

Sponsored athlete update

Some of club sponsored athletes have been racking up some phenomenal results in the last few weeks. Remember these are non green team athletes sponsored directly by the club.

Notable results in April:

Franci Myburgh - Robor Scaffolding 42.2km - 3rd lady overall (just a week after a great run at the Two Oceans!)

Philip Phakwago - 3rd - Cradle of Humankind 21.1km - 3rd overall

Two podiums in the same week! Well done!
