May 2015 NRCCG Newsletter
Note from the Chairman

After a hugely successful Two Oceans Marathon, April was a very exciting month for the NRCCG!

We held a club promotional day at our time trial on 15th April where all runners were treated to delicious boerie rolls and Nedbank themed cupcakes while having the pleasure of interacting with the elite athletes of the Nedbank Green Dream Team. Runners were also invited to stay for a very beneficial discussion on race day nutrition, presented by sports nutrition expert, Mark Wolf from 32Gi. All participants were treated to samples of both 32Gi and FUTURELIFE bars!

The NRCCG gazebo has been spotted at some of the main local Johannesburg races, such as Birchwood 21km and Slow Mag marathon, catering to our runners needs and keeping a watchful eye on personal belongings.

As we move into the month of May, both races and runners begin to taper off. NRCCG had a great presence at the Colgate 15/32km and the Adrienne Hirsch Challenge 5/10/21km races.

We look forward to our pre-Comrades pasta party being held next Wednesday evening, 20th May and of course, the big milestone of the running calendar, the 90th Comrades Marathon taking place on Sunday 31st May. From all of us on the NRCCG committee, we would like to wish our athletes participating in this year's Comrades the greatest of luck! We look forward to seeing you all out on the road – don't forget to drop off your seconding items for our on-route tables. To those not running Comrades this year, we hope to continue seeing you at our weekly Wednesday evening time trials and encourage you to continue your training through those dark and chilly winter months!

Kindest regards,

Romy Menter

NRCCG Chairman

Training Runs

Besides our weekly Wednesday evening time trials, the NRCCG offer a morning training run to anyone who may wish to join. These runs occur every Tuesday and Thursday morning at 5:30am, from the George Lea Park. Running distance varies from 11-13km depending on the time of year (mileage increases in the build up to Comrades). The average pace of the run is approximately 5:30 minutes per kilometre however there are numerous stopping points and water breaks allowing slower runners to catch up.

All runners who have become regular members of this training group can boast success at both Comrades as well as intermediate distance races!

For those who would like more information on the morning running group or wish to discuss training advice or personalised programs with our very experienced club captains, please do not hesitate to contact us at info@nedbankrunningclubcg.co.za

Time Trial New Route

The new NRCCG time trial route was launched on Wednesday 6th May 2015. The new route prevents our runners from having to cross any dangerous intersections as well as the gate to the George Lea Park. Our time trial is still a 5km route, starting and finishing at George Lea Park.

Although the NRCCG will do whatever we can to ensure your safety, runners are still urged to remain aware of traffic, always run on the right side of the road (facing oncoming cars) and never run with iPod/earphones which distract the runner from potential dangers. Reminder to please wear bright, reflective gear during the winter months.

NRCCG time trials take place every Wednesday evening at 17:30 (17:45 in summer) from the George Lea Park, Parkmore. All are welcome.

Upcoming races and club gazebo

We will be present at the following Jhb races with Nedbank gazebo and tog bag facilities:

Sweatshop RAC 10km – Sunday 17th May, 8am at Old Parks

Comrades Seconding Tables

The NRCCG will once again be setting up seconding tables for our runners at this years Comrades Marathon on 31st May 2015.

Seconding tables will be at the following points:

Table 1 - +- 35km (53km to go)

Table 2 - +- 60km (28km to go – just before the Nedbank Green Mile)

Drop off for seconding tables:

Any items not collected on the day will be discarded. No perishable items are permitted. Seconding tables will also cater for your general requirements, such as vaseline, tissues and plasters.

Best of luck to all running this year's 90th Comrades marathon! We'll see you on the road!

Happy running!
