The Nelson Mandela Bay Legacy Marathon was held over the weekend in which also doubled up as the Eastern Province Marathon championships. Both the men’s and women’s Eastern Province titles went to Nedbank running club athletes.
In the men’s race, Anele Maliza took the EP title with his time of 2:26:37, which also saw him cross the line as first veteran in his age category. In the women’s race, Ntombesintu Mfunzi finished 2nd but was the first EP athlete home which handed her the title in 2:53:41.
“I’m happy with how my run went today and glad that I can lay claim to being EP champion in the marathon to,” said Mfunzi. “I used this race as preparation towards this years Two Oceans and Comrades Marathon’s.”
Some of the Nedbank running club green dream team athletes are currently based at Afriski in Lesotho, taking part in a high-altitude training camp. National manager Nick Bester who is also coach to the group is overseeing some of his athletes as they prepare for the up coming Om Die Dam and Two Oceans ultra-marathons. Gerda Steyn, Chrizell Roberts and Deanne Horn are representing the ladies and Juan Van Deventer the only male athlete.
The Nedbank running club would also like to wish Gerda Steyn a very happy birthday which she celebrated on 3 March at camp in Lesotho.
