Athletes from the Nedbank Running Club (NRC) continued their good performances the last couple of weeks, with especially age groupers excelling and claiming several podium positions countrywide.
Several age groupers need to be highlighted with Nedbank SWD runner Annetjie Botes leading the pack. Only six days after turning 60 on December 10th, Botes won her category in the Somerson Half Marathon in Mossel Bay in a time of 1:36:57. She followed this up by setting her first SA record on December 19th when she won the women's race at the Correctional Services 10km Nite Race in George in a fantastic 41:03 -- erasing the national mark of 41:20 of no less a luminary than Sonja Laxton, set in 2009. To add a cherry on the top Botes placed 2nd female overall (1:14:05) and 1st Grandmaster at the Moordkuil 15km in Hartenbos on December 23rd.
Her teammates and fellow age groupers Louis van der Vyfer and André Barnardo placed 1st and 2nd respectively at the same race, Louis in a time of 1:14:47 and André in a time of 1:19:01. André had another good race at the Knysna 10km Nite Race on December 16th when he placed 2nd in the Grandmasters category in a time of 46:42. He also claimed victory in the Grandmasters category at the Somerson Half Marathon when he crossed the line in a time of 1:38:38. Geraldine Loftie-Eaton and Beatrix de Villiers placed 1st (1:24:29) and 2nd (1:24:29) respectively at the same race.
Other age groupers who need special mention include David O’Reilly and André Fourie who respectively placed 2nd (1:32:09) and 3rd (1:32:37) in the 70-74 category at the N2 City Bluewater Bay 15km on January 13th. Tamsanqa Jusayi claimed first place in the 75-79 category in a time of 1:12:12, while Ronelle Steyn claimed 2nd position in the 70-74 age category in a time of 1:38:54.
