Nedbank RC athletes dominate MTN Fairlands event

The athletes of the Nedbank Running Club proved that success begets success by dominating the MTN Fairlands 21km and 10km over the weekend.

The “Green Team” managed to win three of the four elite-races. Siyaya Khoza (Nedbank RC Soweto Manager) ascribed the success to the athletes being inspired by the good results at the previous weekend’s Comrades.

The Nedbank Running Club athletes certainly made their presence felt at Comrades with no less of five top ten finishes in the men’s as well as the women’s race.

David Manja won the MTN Fairlands in a time of 1:07:44. Lucky Mohale (Boxer) was second in 1:08:34 and the Olympian, Elroy Gelant (Boxer) third in 1:09:23.

Xolisa Tyali outlasted his rivals to win the 10km-race in 31:53 with Raphael Segodo (Rockies) second in 32:11 and Michael Pienaar (Tuks) third in 32:23.

The women’s half-marathon was won by Meseret Gezahegn in 1:18:48 with Mamorallo Tjoka second in 1:23:03. Liziwe Mabona (Ampa) raced to a third place finish running 1:23:18.

**Mthandazo Qhina (Nedbank RC) finished second in the Mamre 21km. He stopped the clock at 1:09:35. Nkosinathi Madyo (Itheko) won in 1:08:34 with Danzil Paulse (East) third running 1:09:55.

**Brendon Effenaar was impressive form over the weekend at the Eastern Province Cross Country League Meeting in Uitenhage. The 21-year old finished fourth in the senior men’s 10km-race clocking 35:14. He was also second in the men’s 4km race running 13:04.

The previous week in Port Elizabeth he won the men’s 10km-race in 33:51 and the 4km-race in 13:37.

Ntombesintu Mfunzi won the women’s 10km race in Uitenhage. Her winning time was 39:10.

**Lesetja Bopape who received the Nedbank Junior Athlete of the Year award in 2016 is looking forward to compete in the junior race of the South African Half Marathon Championships which will be hosted in Port Elizabeth.
