The past weekend because it was a scenario of all roads leading to Durban for road runners to race Comrades there was not much happening in the rest of the country.
In the Southern Cape nothing changed. The Nedbank Running Club athletes still dominate during most races. The past Saturday was no exception. At the men’s race of the Sportcentre 10km race in George five of the club’s athletes placed in the top ten while in the women’s race there were seven top ten finishes.
The 19 year old Ruben Dlepu from Langeberg spoiled the fun for the “Men in Green” by outracing them to win in 31:35. Godwin Heyns was second in 32:53; Donovan Jantjies third in 33:23; Christiaan Lingerveld fourth in 34:44 and Booi Salman fifth in 34:47. It is exciting to note that apart from Salman the rest of the top athletes are all 20 years and younger which could mean that there might be a future Comrades champion in the making amongst them.
Melissa van Rensburg won the women’s race in 38:22 with her club teammates taking the next six positions.
tephany Petro was second in 40:31; Cecilia Nel third in 40:54; Brittney-Ann Meyer fifth in 42:23; Annatjie Botes sixth in 43:14; Carike Fourie seventh in 45:17.
** Bulelwa Simae finished second in the BestMed UWC Fast and Flat 10km in Bellville. She finished in a time of 36:40.
