Mosiako outfox to Olympians at SA Champs
April 26, 2017
Thabang Mosiako (Nedbank RC) beating the Olympians, Elroy Gelant and Steven Mokoka, to win the 5 000m over the weekend at the South African Athletics Championships in Potchefstroom was a definite highlight.
It was if the fabled race between the tortoise and the hare came to life on the track. Gelant started out guns blazing leading for most of the race while Mosiako bided his time just sticking to his game plan not allowing himself be intimidated by the fast pace. His patience paid off. Over the last few hundred metres the Olympian “hit the wall”. The one moment he was running and suddenly he started shuffling.

That was when Mosiako made his move closing a 30 metre gap to win in a time of 14:03.84. Gelant was second in 14:05.59 and Mokoka third in 14:09.59.

Tshepo Tshite had a tactical sound race to finish third in the 800 metres. His time was 1:47.11.

Phillimon Mathiba put in a heroic performance to finish third in the 10 000m. He clocked a time of 30:15.57. The previous weekend he raced to a tenth place in the Two Oceans half-marathon.

Irvette van Zyl decided she like a real challenge. So she entered to compete in the 1 500m as well as the 5 000 metres. It had to do with her quest for speed. The racing on track is always faster which forced her to also up her pace.
She acquitted herself not too badly as she won silver and bronze medals. In the 5 000m she was second in 16:28.53 and the 1 500m she was third in 4:23.23.

**Mzwenkosi Mjaja won the Chatsworth Freedom 10km in KwaZulu-Natal. His winning time was 32:37. Delani Mkhize finished third in 33:26.

It was a clean sweep for the “Green Team” as Zama Mokoena won the women’s race in 40.12.

Khethiwe Memela finished 2nd in the women’s 10km race-walk. She clocked a time of 1:12:07.

**Franci Myburgh finished third in the Robor Scaffolding Marathon Marathon. Her time was 3:28:46.

Benjamin Skhosana raced to a second place finish in the men’s 50km ultra-race running 3:06:58.

**At the Forever Resorts Loskop 50km ultra-race Collin Parura Kanyimo (Zim) did well to finish second in 2:48:44. Felix Mushurwa (Zim) was third in 2:54:54
