The Old Mutual Om Die Dam Marathon offers mat-to-mat timing on the ultra-marathon, which means that your running time will only start once you cross the starting mat. This means that there is no pressure to be near the front of the start, as no time is lost between the start gun and you crossing the start mat.

Also, because  the race is timed by ChampionChip, all runners doing the ultra will automatically have their times submitted to the Comrades Marathon for seeding purposes.
